Charging as Bedding

Here are 2 steps to charge biochar as bedding. Charging biochar is easier than you think… There are many ways to do it, none of them is “wrong”.

This is a graphic that explain how to charge biochar as a bedding. On the right side there is a picture of chicken. On the left side are two steps that descripe how to charge biochar as bedding. First, Substitute your bedding with biochar. Second, the biochar charges with the animal droppings. Use it after changing the bedding.

The purpose of charging is to fill the nutrient storage capacity of the biochar. This way it will be able to release nutrients once it is in the soil. If you don’t charge it, the biochar will first take up nutrients from your soil and temporarily depleat it.

Charging Biochar – Bedding

You can use biochar as a bedding for any livestock, commonly it is used for poultry.

  1. Substitute all or some of your ususal bedding with biochar.
  2. The biochar charges with the nutrients in the animal bedding. You can use the biochar after you change the bedding. Biochar can take up a lot of liquid and nutrients so it is the perfect bedding. You need to change your bedding less often when using biochar.

Apply the biochar to the soil (this is discribed in other posts).

You can always mix your nutrients sources: grass cuttings with compost, manure with urine, compost with manure…

There are many benefits of using biochar as a bedding. Check my other blog posts about it.
