Three steps to making biochar. The first step is making and shows a picture of pieces of char. The second step is charging and shows a picture of a pile of manure. The third step is applying and it shows a picture of biochar in fron tof plants. There are describtions for each step.

How can I make biochar? 🌿

There are three steps to making biochar:

1. Making the char:

Biochar works because of its structure. Biochar is a carbon structure like charcoal. This structure has many pores and a huge surface area so it can hold nutrients and water like a sponge.

2. Charging the char:

Charging means loading your char up with nutrients. You can charge with compost, manure, urine, fertilizer, compost tea… Biochar naturally attracts nutrients. If you don’t charge it, it will take up nutrients from your soil and temporarily depleat it.

3. Applying the biochar:

The biochar should be put in the soil where the plant roots are (~20cm deep). You can apply it in every plant hole or on the whole field. For pots and nursery trays you can mix soil with 10% biochar. The biochar is permanent and you can always reapply, so don’t worry about applying “too little”.
